Magnesium (mg) is known as the “relaxation mineral” or “nature’s tranquilizer”. Magnesium:
- Is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to activate over 300 enzymatic functions in the body related mostly to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism
- Helps with the utilization of vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E, fats, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium
- It is important in the creation of DNA, for protein synthesis and the removal of toxic substances from the body
- Is vital for healthy muscle tone, bones, and heart
- Regulates the blood sugar levels, acid/alkaline balance, and prevents the build-up of cholesterol in the body
- Is required for a healthy immune system and helps regulate blood pressure
There are many signs of magnesium deficiency which may include:
- Low body stores of mg may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms
- Apprehension
- Muscle twitching or spasm
- Twitching eyelids
- Numbness, tingling
- Hardening of joints and blood vessels
- Arthritis
- Tremors
- Confusion
- Disorientation
- Low levels of mg have also been linked to irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, poor circulation, clogged arteries, cold hands, panic attacks, restless leg syndrome, and varicose/spider veins
